Stat

Stat is the concept for a projection onto the iconic façade of the Basilica of San Petronio, the main church in my hometown of Bologna, Italy. It shows a collection of designs that through the centuries were produced for its completion and were never realised. The event would take place in the summer, when a stage and the biggest screen in Europe are placed in the main square, impressively overlooked by the church. The stage would accomodate the orchestra playing Gioacchino Rossini’s Stabat Mater, while the screen would accompany the projection on the façade by showing the complete design (as the lines exceed the limits of the church’s silhouette) along with the author and year of execution. Each design is showed in chronological order, a sequence that culminates in a graphic palimpsest of all that could have been and never was.

Other scenarios

A possible evolution within the project could be the extension of the line graphics to other alterations that could or could have affected the façade. It broadens the scope of the piece to include all that could have happened if people had had their way. For instance, the building has twice been saved from planned terrorist attempts at blowing it up. What would San Petronio look like if such tragedies had occurred?
